Graduate Research Assistant Position

This 20-hour a week RA position will support the National Science Foundation grant, Diversifying Human Centered-Data Science through the Research and Design of Ethical Games (SMA #2127924). This interdisciplinary study explores the learning experiences of diverse undergraduates at two universities as they collaborate in the research and design of a simulation game that teaches ethical thinking in data science and artificial intelligence. Our work seeks to identify factors that enhance the experiences of underrepresented people in data ethics and contribute to the knowledge of STEM learning benefits and barriers for students of color.

RA Duties include:

· Leading a student research group, consisting of undergraduate and masters' students at 2 universities

· Organizing students into small groups and coaching them in project tasks

· Keeping project materials well organized, including student work and research data.

· Qualitatively analyzing data and writing results summaries.

· Co-writing presentations and articles for academic conferences and journals - at least 1 paper per year and multiple posters.

· Communicating regularly with primary investigators at UNT and the University of Washington via video call, telephone, or email.

Required Qualifications:

· Masters or Doctoral (PhD) level student.

· Knowledge of and experience with qualitative methods and basic learning theories

· Experience leading groups and/or teams.

· Solid writing and communication skills in the English language.

· Ability to attend meetings two to three times a week.

· Hardworking, energetic, and organized.

Desired Qualifications:

· Experience working within communities of color in the United States (e.g. Latinx and Black communities).

· Knowledge of wide range of game styles and/or game design.

· Experience writing and publishing academic papers for journals and/or conferences.

This project is currently active and scheduled to finish in January 2024. It is expected that the person applying to the position will commit to working on the project until it finishes.

Project Overview
 
This position is part of a grant funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) to explore the use of
bibliographic metadata for building machine models to help identify high-value publications from large web archives.
This project combines the fields of library and information science with artificial intelligence and machine learning to
explore new ways of building collections.
 
Position Description
This 20-hour per week position is for a graduate research assistant to assist in a two-year grant funded project to
demonstrate the capability and effectiveness of leveraging bibliographic metadata utilizing machine learning tools
and techniques to extract and identify high-content value documents from Web Archives as part of an IMLS funded
grant project. The student will assist in the creation of custom scripts for parsing and loading textual data into the
machine learning workflow and training and configuring machine learning tools in classification tasks required by the
project. They will conduct environmental scans related to the project and review project-related reports.
Additionally, the student will participate in project meetings and provide general project and office assistance to the
principal investigators.

Hours and Location
This position is part-time at 20 hours per week. Students may set their own schedules but are expected to work
during standard office hours which are Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. Willis Library on the Denton
main campus is the work location for this position.

Teaching Assistant for a Health Informatics Class

Dr. Muhammad Amith is seeking a health informatics concentration student. It is preferred, but not required for the student to have taken INFO 5365. Good communication and organizational skills are a must. The student must be able to attend face-to-face meetings on a weekly basis. Paid and Volunteer Research Assistant Positions for the Computational Healthcare and Biotechnology (COHB)

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Designing and developing new and/or optimized models using artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) for big genomics datasets.
  2. Research and collects data through complex techniques and procedures or other project-specific methodology.
  3. Designing and developing new and optimized computational models and algorithms for the assigned projects.
  4. Interprets, synthesizes, and analyzes data.
  5. Plans and modifies research techniques, procedures, tests, equipment, or software management.
  6. Opportunities for collaboration on writing and editing materials for publications, presentations, and grant proposals.
  7. Participate in weekly lab meetings with the lab director, Dr. Mohammed Aledhari, and other research team members.
  8. Performs other related duties as required.

Additional Information for the Ph.D. RA:

The paid RA positions for a Ph.D. students come with a tuition waiver and monthly stipend. The appointment length will be one year with the potential for extension (up to 4 years). Extensions are subject to the performance and the availability of funding.
