M.S. in Library Science & Information Science
A practicum (INFO 5090 or INFO 5094 depending on start semester) or an internship is a required component of the M.S. degree and is designed to connect academic theory with professional practice in a library or information setting.
Students who have completed substantial, qualifying professional experience may request a waiver.
To graduate, students must either complete INFO 5090 or INFO 5094 or have an approved waiver on file before the start of their second-to-last semester. Waiver review may take 4–6 weeks.
To complete the Practical component of the MS degree:
- Students that began prior to Fall 2026 will complete INFO 5090
- Students that began in Fall 2026 (or have program advisor approval) will complete INFO 5094
If students have relevant, professional, paid work experience of at least 6 months or more, that is eligible for a waiver they should:
- Have the waiver approved before the start of their second-to-last semester
Waiver review may take 4–6 weeks.
You may request a waiver if you:
- Are in the Library Science or Information Science major
- Worked part-time or more
- Held a paid professional position
- Worked a minimum of 6 months
- Performed professional-level duties
- Were supervised by a library or information professional
Not Eligible If:
- Experience was in an Early Childhood–12th Grade School Library
- You are a Data Science M.S. student
- You are a Health Informatic M.S. student
- You are pursuing School Library Certification - These students must complete INFO 5191, 5192 and 5193.
Students requesting a waiver for the Children’s & Young Adult Librarianship concentration must:
- Have experience working with youth in a library setting
- Submit a one-page paper describing youth librarianship experience
- Include specific details about youth programming
Submit your waiver by:
- Spring Graduation - August 15
- Summer Graduation - December 1
- Fall Graduation - May 15
Note: Late submissions may delay your graduation.
Step 1 – Complete the Waiver Form
Fill out the Practicum/Field Experience Request for Waiver Form completely.
Step 2 – Save and Rename Your Files Correctly
Save your files using the required naming format:
Waiver File:LastName_FirstName_8-DigitID#_Waiver
Supporting Documentation File:LastName_FirstName_8-DigitID#_Documentation
Files that are not named correctly will be returned for correction.
Step 3 – Required Supporting Documentation
You must submit documentation that clearly verifies:
- The position was paid
- You worked part-time or more
- Employment lasted a minimum of 6 months
Documentation must clearly show:
- Employer name
- Your position title
- Start date
- End date
If your position is ongoing and there is no end date:
- Documentation must confirm current employment
- On the waiver form, enter “Not Applicable” in the end date field
If documentation does not clearly demonstrate at least six months of qualifying employment, the waiver will not be approved.
Step 4 – Email Your Completed Application
After completing the waiver form and renaming both files correctly, email the waiver form and supporting documentation to: LIS-Practicum@unt.edu
Incomplete, improperly named, or missing documentation will result in the application being returned for resubmission.
