Grad Track Program for Data Science

The Grad Track is a program option for students enrolled in the B.S. in Data Science (BSDS) program planning ahead for a graduate program and who wish to pursue the Master of Science in Data Science (MSDS) program. A student admitted to the Grad Track program may enroll in six semester credit hours (2 courses) of graduate-level Data Science courses while completing the B.S. in Data Science degree. The credits earned will count first toward the BSDS and then the MSDS degree program.


Benefits of Grad Track and Graduate Study

  1. Lessens the expense and shortens the time to complete the Master of Science program from 36 credit hours to 30 credit hours of coursework.
  2. Prepares the student for the rigors of graduate-level coursework while still at the undergraduate level.
  3. Provides uninterrupted continuity of the knowledge gained as an undergraduate student to graduate-level courses.
  4. Provides an accelerated path to employment as a data science professional.

What courses will I take?

After application approval, students planning to enter the M.S. in Data Science degree program will choose two (2) courses from the following list of graduate courses:

  • INFO 5307 - Knowledge Management Tools and Technologies
  • INFO 5503 - Knowledge Management Processes and Practices
  • INFO 5707 - Data Modeling for Information Professionals
  • INFO 5709 - Data Visualization and Communication
  • INFO 5731 - Computational Methods for Information Systems
  • INFO 5735 - Usability and User Experience Assessment
  • INFO 5737 - Information and Cyber-Security
  • INFO 5810 - Data Analysis and Knowledge Discovery


Admission Requirements for the Grad Track Program

  1. Applicants for the Grad Track option should be students in the UNT College of Information pursuing the Bachelor of Science in Data Science (BSDS) degree.
  2. A student may apply for the grad track option during their junior year (and must have completed at least 75 credit hours at the time of application to grad track).
  3. A minimum of 3.5 cumulative GPA is required at the time of application submission.
  4. Admission to the grad track program will require completion of a BSDS degree in one of the professional fields as well as successful completion of MATH 1650, MATH 1680, CSCE 1030, and CSCE 1040.
  5. The student will provide two recommendation letters from Department of Information Science faculty members who can evaluate the student's ability to complete graduate level work.
  6. The application will be reviewed by the COI advising and admissions student support services office and the undergraduate and graduate advisors.

How to apply

  1. Complete the Department of Information Science Data Science Grad Track application.
  2. Provide a copy of unofficial UNT transcripts.
  3. Provide two (2) recommendation letters from the Department of Information Science faculty members.
  4. Submit the application form, unofficial transcripts, and the two recommendation letters to the COI Advising office via email at ci-advising@unt.edu
