Dr. Jeonghyun (Annie) Kim, a faculty member in the Department of Information Science at the University of North Texas, has achieved a major milestone with the publication of her co-authored research article in PLOS ONE, a respected peer-reviewed, multidisciplinary open-access journal.
The article, titled “University students' self-assessment of data literacy: A validation study,” was co-authored with Dr. Lingzi Hong (UNT) and Dr. Ayoung Yoon (Indiana University Indianapolis). It appears in the April 2025 issue of PLOS ONE and is available online at https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0322104.
The study represents a successful interdisciplinary collaboration between the Information Science and Data Science departments at UNT, along with Indiana University Indianapolis. Drawing on the data literacy scale developed through the IMLS-funded project RE-252374-OLS-22, the research rigorously validates how university students assess their data literacy skills.
This publication not only highlights Dr. Kim’s leadership in the field of data literacy and assessment but also marks an important contribution to the growing body of research on how students understand and evaluate their competencies in data use and interpretation. The scale used in the study was developed as part of the broader Data Literacy for Community Colleges (DLCC) initiative. More about this initiative can be found at https://ci.unt.edu/dlcc/
Dr. Kim’s achievement underscores UNT’s commitment to impactful, interdisciplinary research that bridges theory, practice, and real-world application in information science. Her work continues to influence how data literacy is taught, measured, and understood across educational contexts.
