Important Note: The application for the School Librarian Certification is a two-step process. Instructions for both are described below. If you are applying for School Librarian Certification and you do not have a Master's degree you will need to apply for the MS in Library Science or Information Science.

***NOTE: If you are applying for School Librarian Certification along with the M.S. in Library
Science or Information Science program, you will need to choose the Master's Program
when Applying through the ApplyTexas.org website.***
***NOTE: If you are applying for the School Library Certification without applying to the
master's degree program, please select "School Librarian Certification" as the major.

1. Apply to the University of North Texas Toulouse Graduate School
A. Complete the ApplyTexas application online and pay the $75 non-refundable application fee. Your completed application will be processed by the UNT Toulouse Graduate School and reviewed by your academic program.
- You will need to meet the Graduate School minimum qualifications before you will be considered for admission to the Department of Information Science.
B. Submit official transcripts from all colleges attended.
- For School Librarian Certificate only applicants, they are required to have a finished Master's Degree.
*Note: We do not require GRE scores.
2. Department of Information Science Application
In order to complete the Department's application process for the School Librarian Certification Program:
- Upload the following documents to the MyUNT Portal through the Task List (Files must be in PDF Format):
- Two (2) Letters of Recommendation. These need to be formal letters of recommendation with a signature, or on (company/school) letterhead. They should be from former professors, or other authority figures in your professional experience who can evaluate your academic qualification, and assess your potential for success as an information professional. One of these letters must come from a school Administrator.
- A Resumé complete with your teaching experience and list of honors and activities.
- A One full-page or more Statement of Purpose, singled spaced and in 12pt font. This statement needs to detail your interest in the program, and reviewing your professional goals.
Here are some prompts for the Statement of Purpose.
- What made you decide to become a Librarian? Explain why a School Librarianship career is right for you.
- What do you believe are the most important attributes and/or qualities of a successful School Librarian today and why?
- What Challenges might you personally face as a Librarian? Identify two (2) characteristics you possess and explain how they will enable you to effectively address these changes.
(MS with Certification) This form will be emailed to you after your application has been deferred for Departmental Review.
- Complete the form for the Certificate through the College of Education, you will need
to upload some of your Teaching Documentation.
- Current Teaching Certificate
- Teaching Service Record
*Note: We do not require GRE scores.
The Information Science department will verify that minimum grade point average meets one of the following requirements:
- 3.0 on the last 60 hours of a bachelor's degree,
- 3.0 cumulative undergraduate GPA,
- a 3.5 GPA on a completed master's degree.
