IS student LaMoya Burks is TLA's Member of the Month

The Texas Library Association has named IS student LaMoya Burks as Member of the Month for August 2017.

 LaMoya Burks is receiving her second Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science in Fall 2017 from UNT. She is a Library Science major with Graduate Academic Certificates in Advanced Management in Library and Information Agencies and Digital Content Management.  Her first Masters Degree is in Curriculum and Instruction from Texas A&M University-Texarkana. She has participated in the UNT GSTEP program (Graduate Student Teaching Excellence Program) and UNT Course Design Institute.  She was appointed as an Intern for the American Library Association for 2017-2019, is the Chair for District 5 (2017-2018) for the Texas Library Association , as well as serves on the Legislative committee for TLA CULD and TLA Black Caucus Committee Member. At the District 5 Fall Conference in Tyler, Texas 2016-2017, as Chair-Elect she presented her session " Our Iceberg is Melting: Succeeding in Library Environments."  She is employed with Texarkana College as Academic Librarian, Professor, and Faculty Advisor.  

She has served at Texarkana College as Director of Testing, Educational Specialist for TRIO with the Department of Education, and has been Texarkana College Orientation Speaker for Freshman Orientation. She has also previously interned for the Mayor of the City of Conway, Arkansas in 2006.  In 2014, she was nominated for Four States Living Magazine as " Fabulous 40 & under" in Texarkana, Texas.  LaMoya serves as Finance Vice President for the Junior League of Texarkana, has been appointed to both the Pleasant Grove Independent School District Foundation Board and District of Innovation committee in Texarkana, TX. She is also on the 2017 Susan G Komen Race for the Cure Committee and a Breastfeeding Mentor for the Bowie County Health Clinic in Texarkana Texas. At Polly Chapel Baptist Church, she teaches for Youth Connection, attends Bible Study, and is on the Vision Planning Team.  LaMoya is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated, Kappa Xi Omega Chapter. She is the proud wife of Marion Burks Jr and excited to be the mother of Marion III and Reed.
