PhD Admissions Checklist

If you have submitted a complete application and have not been contacted, please contact the IS Department's Main Office.

Step 1.  Apply to the University of North Texas Toulouse School of Graduate Studies.

  1. Apply to the UNT Toulouse School of Graduate Studies. International students must apply through the International School 
    • You need to complete the Graduate School minimum qualifications before you will be considered for admission to the Department of Library and Information Sciences:
      1. Request that official copies of all transcripts be sent to the Graduate School.
      2. If applicable, take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or complete the noncredit intensive course in English from the UNT Intensive English Language Institute.
      3. If applicable, submit to the Graduate School proof of financial resources available.

Step 2.  Apply to the IS PhD Program:

  1. Complete the IS PhD Application which can be found below (PDF format). In order to complete this Application, you should have already completed Step 1 above.

  2. Enclose with the application the following additional materials:
     
    • Personal statement (300–500 words) stating your research interests in onew or more areas of information science and discussing how your background prepares you for a doctoral program in information science
    • Curriculum vita
    • Example of formal academic writing of asingle authorship (published paper, major term paper, thesis chapter, etc.)
    • An official score report on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) 
    • Submit these materials via:
      • Email to: CI-IISPhD@unt.edu  (electronic submissions are encouraged)

      • Or fax to 940-369-7898
  3. Request recommendation letters from three (3) former professors, employers, etc. Recommenders should state how long and in what capacity they have known the applicant and provide support for the applicant's research potential and ability to succeed in completing the years of challenging study and independent research necessary for earning a scholarly doctoral degree. Recommenders should submit letters directly to the IS PhD Program Office via email (preferred) or one of the other two -- mail or fax -- ways shown above.
  4. If your application is not complete, you will be notified in a letter of any outstanding items missing from your application.

Step 3.  How will my Application be processed:

When all of the items above (Step 1 and Step 2) have been received by the November 1st deadline, your application will be considered complete and will be evaluated by the IS PhD Admissions Committee. Following that evaluation a decision regarding your admission to our program for the following Fall semester will be made. IS PhD Program Office will notify you of the admission decision by the end of January (within 3 months from application deadline).
