The 2017 American Library Association Conference held in Chicago on June 21-27, 2017 was a memorable one for UNT College of Information - Department of Information Science Master's student LaMoya Burks.

Two students in the Masters program in the ELMS/Arkansas-Tennessee Cohort and Northern California Cohort are recipients of the ALA Spectrum Scholarship. Congratulations to Nathalie Garcia-Gomez (ProQuest Scholar);ELMS Cohort and Chantel L. Walker, Northern California Cohort.

The faculty and staff of the Department of Information Science, along with the Texas library community, mourn the passing of Professor Margaret Irby Nichols, who died on Tuesday evening, June 6 with her beloved daughter Nina, and grandson Spencer by her side. Margaret Nichols was a professor in the School Library and Information Sciences from 1968-1991.

The Department of Information Science is pleased to announce that Susan O’Connell, a student in the VT-NH-ME cohort, is the 2017 recipient of the David H. Clift Scholarship.

This year’s annual meeting of the Medical Library Association (MLA) will be a special and memorable one for IS Lecturer, Dr. Jodi Philbrick, who will be receiving the President’s Award for her valuable work with the Association.

The Department of Information Science welcomes Bobbie Bushman, who joined the Information Science faculty as a Lecturer in January 2017. Bobbie previously taught at Missouri State University in Springfield, MO.

Greater Los Angeles student, Tommy Beane, has received a $1,500 scholarship from the Southern California Association of Law Libraries (SCALL). SCALL is a local chapter of the American Association of Law Libraries (AALL).

The College of Information (COI) is pleased to announce Dr. Michael J. Robertson, MS ’04, PhD ’09, has been promoted to Dean of eLearning at North Central Texas College (NCTC) in Corinth, Texas. Michael began his career at NCTC as an Instructional Designer in 2009 and was soon promoted to eLearning Coordinator and then in 2012 became Associate Dean of eLearning.

Virginia Rey is the 2016 UNT Department of Library and Information Sciences Outstanding Alumna. Ms. Rey will be the keynote speaker at the College of Information Undergraduate Recognition Ceremony to be held May 13, 2016 at the UNT Murchison Performing Center.

UNT Department of Library and Information Sciences is pleased to announce that members of the faculty will be making presentations during the 2016 Texas Library Conference to be held in Houston, Texas, April 19-22. This state conference is the largest state library conference in the US with some 7,000 to 8,000 attendees yearly. Over 450 companies also exhibit at TLA.

The Department of Library and Information Sciences, in collaboration with the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Library and Informatics Center, is offering its ALA-accredited Master's of Science in Library Science (LS) or Information Science (IS) program to a cohort of students in New Mexico. This new cohort will begin in Fall 2016, and will be directed by Drs. Michele A.L.

The Department of Information Science congratulates Hannah Rutledge whose dissertation was featured in American Libraries Magazine.

Dr. June Abbas, 2001 Ph.D. graduate has been selected as the 2016 Frederick G. Kilgour Award for Research in Library and Information Technology recipient.

Six students pursuing their Master's degree have been awarded the 2016-2017 Spectrum Scholarship by the American Library Association.

"As the President of the Black Caucus, Kelvin Watson, Chief Operating Officer of the Queens Public Library, was introducing the Demco Award, he said the winner does not know that they will receive this award," said Dr. Yvonne Chandler as she explained her initial reaction to Sunday night's events.

Nancy Jo Lambert is the Texas Library Association's Member of the Month for July 2016!  Nancy Jo graduated in 2010 from UNT in May 2010 with a Master's in Library Science. She also attended the University of Oklahoma, Tarrant County College, and the University of Texas at Arlington for her Bachelor’s degree.  

The College of Information is pleased to announce that it has named Kinshuk as its new dean. Kinshuk, who is formerly the associate dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology at Athabasca University in Alberta, Canada, will begin his new role with the college on August 15, 2016.  

The College of Information Department of Science has established an endowed professorship fund called The Reinburg Professorship in Data Sciences.

Associate Professor Dr. Jeonghyun (Annie) Kim and doctoral candidate Sujira Ammarukleart have successfully co-autheored a paper that has been accepted for publication in the peer-reviewed journal Digital Library Perspectives (formerly OCLC Systems & Services: International Digital Library Perspectives). 

Katy Massingill Manck (MLS, '79; SLMSC '05) was elected as President of the International Association of School Librarianship during its August 2016 conference in Tokyo.

DENTON, Texas (UNT) –  As of Oct. 1, the Department of Library and Information Sciences will be known as the Department of Information Science.

Dr. Kinshuk - COI Dean met with Nevada Cohort alumni on Monday October 17th and exchanged ideas with the group about UNT programs and the future of the profession.

IS alumnus, Roosevelt Weeks is among the 10 winners of the prestigious American Library Association I Love My Librarian 2016 Award.

Drs. Yvonne Chandler and Yunfei Du from the College of Information Department of Information Science presented papers at the 7th Asia-Pacific Conference on Library & Information Education and Practice (A-LIEP), hosted by Nanjing University, School of Information Management, November 4 - 5, in Nanjing, China.

The Department of Information Science (IS) was well represented at both the 12th International Conference on Knowledge Management (ICKM) and the Association for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T) conference held in Vienna, Austria and Copenhagen, Denma
